Monday, on my day off, I went to the studio to work on some sections of the piece I knew I’d be touching on Tuesday. Although I’d got a lot done the first three days, I felt that if I didn’t come in prepared on Tuesday, I’d be pushing to the last minute of my time here. I wanted to leave two full days to work on the final section. That section is the most complex in terms of musicality and choreography with lots of partnering and several choreographies going on simultaneously; I figured it would take me the longest. It also is the section that has to sum up and speak to the rest of the ballet. It must feel like a culmination of what’s come before.After working for three hours in the morning, I went with Vance, the technical director, to Pinnacle, one of the spaces in which we’ll be performing. I was impressed with the space. It is a roomy stage and a nice house for the audience to sit. Vance wanted to show me what options the stage has for lighting and tech.
