Press Release – Movmnt Magazine Issue 9 – ARTI$TIC REINVENTION – SPRING/SUMMER 2009

Movmnt Magazine’s cover of the green/poster issue: Arti$tic Reinvention (right) and The Black, limited edition version
JUNE 2009 – Movmnt presents the first ever environmentally friendly magazine in the shape of a giant poster. This issue is a statement and need to artistically reinvent ourselves in these times of environmental consciousnesses and economic crisis. This Spring, Movmnt creatively brings a giant issue in the form of a fold-out poster that includes content you would normally find while flipping pages in a regular ‘ol magazine. This one-of-a-kind issue uses less paper and is printed on recycled paper as always, just another way Movmnt is stepping up to help save the environment.
“Reinventing ourselves is an art we have learned to master,” comments Publisher David Benaym in his Letter from the Editor. He explains that “The idea of the poster/green issue was first by necessity, then from challenges, and finally by philosophy.”

The fold-out spread includes an exclusive interview with T.I. right before being sentenced to prison, Swan Lake revisited ‘Barbie Style’ featuring American Ballet Theatre performers, a fashion photoshoot along the West Side Highway with the cast of West Side Story on Broadway, a look behind Bjork’s “Wanderlust,” a dance comic parody in honor of the Wayan’s brother’s latest movie, Dance Flick, and much more.
WEST SIDE HIGHWAY, A FASHION STORY
Movmnt takes performers from the cast of West Side Story on Broadway on a trip down Manhattan’s West Side Highway. Celebrity stylist, Derek Wharburton, from dereklovesshopping.com, colorfully styles the performers with photographer and journalist, Matthew Murphy, behind the lens while Movmnt re-imagines some of the famous images from West Side Story.

TI INTERVIEW AND FLASHBACK TO THE FUNKY DRUMMERS’ ROOTS
Movmnt raps with T.I. right before his incarceration to find out how the real Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr. has reinvented himself. Also in this issue, Movmnt pays tribute to U2′s everlasting career, interviews young singer/songwriter Serena Ryder, and investigates the history of Clyde Stubblefield’s famous drum sample. Don’t forget about Movmnt’s favorite playlist and music reviews, as seen in every issue.
FIGHT THE CRISIS WITH A POSTER ISSUE COUPLED WITH AN EXTENDED DIGITAL EDITION
This spring, Movmnt steps up to the economical challenge without compromising its coverage and stories, even though this issue was printed using less paper. No advertising on the poster means a full 32 pages of content. Not to mention, with the poster you also get full free access to the online version that has exclusive extended content in the form of a flipping magazine.

The online version of Movmnt reaches out to new audiences and gives them interactive access at their fingertips. If you would like to purchase either the poster combined with extended content or just the digital version of this special issue, visit movmnt.com/backissues/issue9.
Here is some of the exclusive content available online in the full extended digital edition accessible for free to all our subscribers and newsstands readers.

Dances With Tractors
An alert iReporter caught this tractor square dance in Maria Stein, Ohio on tape. Not only is the sight of multiple John Deeres do-si-doing around each other all kinds of awesome, but also note how each one and its driver are decked out like superheroes. My vote goes to Wonder Woman.
Pina Bausch – News
Pina Bausch - News
Pina Bausch: 1940-2009
German news is sadly reporting that Pina Bausch has died at the age of 68. According to the news reports, Ms. Bausch was diagnosed with cancer less than a week ago, although there is no confirmation that the cancer was directly related to her death.
Our deepest sympathies to her friends, family and loved ones.
Meditative goosebumps
Yogatoday.com has a free class up this week that focuses on relaxation. The class is taught by my favorite teacher on that website, and it worked so nicely to center me on my breathing. That is what yoga is for, even though some classes (*ahem*atthegym*ahem*) can make you forget that. It is one thing you get when you find a solid teacher.
So this evening I was practicing, and breathing, and I got goosebumps. I was in child's pose the first time, and I could feel my forehead tingling where it touched the floor. And I just connected, so nicely. Not to any partner—to myself.
I love myself some yoga.
Re-Imagining Utopia in NYC
Here are a few photos that I took on my phone at the Austria-NYC exchange which I co-curated with Isabel Lewis in collaboration with Martina Hochmuth and Sigrid Gareis. It was initiated by the Austrian Cultural Forum (NYC) in partnership with Movement Research and Tanzquartier Wien. It featured presentations by Austria-based Participants Philipp Gehmacher and Vladimir Miller; united sorry (Frans Poelstra & Robert Steijn); Cabula6 (Jeremy Xido and Claudia Heu); Doris Uhlich and Andrea Salzmann; Anette Baldauf. NYC-based Participants Eagle Ager; Jill Sigman; Melinda Ring; Ann Liv Young; Jenn Joy. I was only able to take photos during Cabula6, Andrea, Jenn, united sorry and Eagle Ager’s presentations:
Viento de Agua at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival
It was a sticky, humid day at the 2009 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, but this did not stop Puerto Rican bomba y plena musicians Viento de Agua from giving a dynamic performance that had the audience on its feet dancing.
Here is a video I made of Viento de Agua performing a plena. I did not catch the name of the song, so if anyone knows what it is, please comment. Plena is a traditional Puerto Rican style of music that we were told has its roots in the sound of a train. You can certainly here this underlying “chugging” sound in the music. Plena is one of the many caribbean styles that lends its rhythms and styles to salsa and merengue. It is characterized by the use of percussion instruments and vocal harmonies to form the rhythm and tune.
The second half of the 2009 Smithsonian Folklife Festival runs July 1-9 on the National Mall. The three featured themes this year are:
- Giving Voice: The Power of Words in African American Culture
- Wales/Cymru
and my personal favorite…
- Las Americas: Un Mundo Musical / Music in Latino Culture
