Book Review: Gwendolyn, The Graceful Pig

March 10, 2010 · Posted by 4dancers ·
This charming kids book makes a great gift for a younger child (designed for ages 3 to 8). At 40 pages, there is plenty to look at, and the illustrations are darling. The story is about Gwendolyn and her pig pal Omar and their pursuit of a dream. Gwendolyn longs to be a ballerina, while clumsy Omar is hoping to score a spot on the football team. It’s a simple story, but one with an uplifting message of hope. Children have the chance to see that you can reach your dreams, and that hard work does indeed pay off. I loved that the story appeals ...

Muddy Water Puddle Place

The muddy water puddle place is so much fun! I use this place to teach borree and saute to my 3 year old ballerinas. We tip- toe through the puddles, we jump in the puddles and splash our friends, and we even roll in the puddles and get all muddy. I think this place really encompasses imagination, movement qualities, ballet vocabulary, and movement that is good for the brain and the body. I try to incorporate all of these into every part of the class. After we have rolled in the mud, we take a pretend shower to wash off ...

Ballet Summer Intensives

Summer is coming! Have you decided what type of training you will be doing? Summertime is a great time to take advantage of all the different summer dance intensive programs that go on. As a guy, you have a lot more opportunities than you would expect. What is an intensive? Summer dance intensives are a great way to fit in a lot of training in a relatively small time period. They are also a great way to visit new studios or meet new dancers. Intensives are usually put on by professional ballet companies, college dance programs, or dance studios. Summer intensives are often ...

The History Of Ballet

March 9, 2010 · Posted by 4dancers ·
Many people who teach ballet don’t know much about the history of this art form. Here is a good resource from Northeastern University that provides some of the background–reaching all the way back to the courts of Renaissance Italy. This site is definitely worth a quick read to brush up on the details if you plan on teaching. It is also a great primer for dancers who have not yet learned about the art form that they are practicing. I found it to be conscise, yet quite detailed. La Fille Mal Gardée

Is this ballet for you? Go If: Girly and funny stories with plenty of romance, ribbons and happy endings are your thing and you simply can’t get enough of Ashton. You are bringing your kids or friends to see a ballet for the first time and need something light and fluffy to start with. Skip If: People dressed as animals freak you out. Fille is not quite as bad as Tales of Beatrix Potter in that regard but it does feature dancing chickens, a rooster and even a real pony. Dream Cast: Lise: Marianela Nuñez is the quintessential ray-of-sunshine Fille. Colas: Carlos Acosta is ...

Reader Topic: Getting Free Dance Lessons

March 9, 2010 · Posted by You Dance Funny, So Does Me ·
So I was contacted by a reader who moderates the website http://fr.ee, a website that is solely devoted to getting freebies in life, including how to get free dance lessons.  He suggested that as a topic for my blog and I am happy to oblige…because unsurprisingly, I have opinions on this.  They already have a post that is more focused on ballroom dances like salsa, so I thought I’d tackle styles that I’m either more familiar with or have somehow managed to make its way into my category bar you see to the right. I must preface by saying that my ...

Teaching Tip: About Practicing At Home

March 9, 2010 · Posted by 4dancers ·
I have beginning students ask me what they can practice at home to improve their dancing. My usual answer is…nothing. As a new student (especially in ballet), doing steps at home can actually be a bad thing. If the student doesn’t understand technique, they can begin to develop bad habits which can be very hard to break. This view may seem extreme, but I have found it is a good one to advocate. When students have some knowledge of technique it is fine to give suggestions for practice, but with a rank beginner it is better that they come to class and learn how to ...
