10 Questions With…Mark Deler

Today’s “10 Questions With…” features a young dancer at the beginning of his career. Please welcome Mark Deler…
1. How did you become involved with dance?
I became involved in dance when i was 16 years old. I was in my room listening and dancing to some Michael Jackson and I did one of his big leg kicks. I noticed that for not much training I could kick pretty high and pick up movement rather quick. In high school (Riverside Brookfield HS) I was approached by the dance team, Orchesis, because they were in need of men.
They asked and I said of ...

Yesterday The Independent published an interesting feature on the Royal Ballet’s Liam Scarlett, a young choreographer who wants to challenge the perception of ballet as an art that is “all about tutus and glitter”. We posted this feature on Twitter and Facebook and got interesting reactions. On both channels people hastened to add that ballet has not been about tutus & princesses for years. We agree. It puzzles us that ballet should so often be tagged in this manner when even back in early days there were works that attempted to shift focus from fairy stories to everyday life. Not ...
How to Handle a Rope

While full length pieces such as Mayerling, Manon, Anastasia and Romeo and Juliet invite reflection on MacMillan’s recurring theme of the Outsider, a mixed bill of his one act ballets, such as the Royal Ballet’s latest, gives audiences a chance to shift focus and contemplate MacMillan’s wide range. From academic classical to modern ballet, from abstract to story-based or semi-narrative, this current triple bill shows his diverse work and vision.

Brighter Than Sunshine

It’s hard to resist Fille and its enchanting world. It takes less than a cockrel’s crow for us to break into full smile and feel like spring has just arrived. Sir Frederick Ashton’s beautiful candy coloured confection has all the correct ingredients: a story about love with captivating characters and delightful choreography.

As Lise Marianela Nuñez is feisty and charming. Her dancing delivers both comedy and lyricism, projecting the fiery spirit of a country girl who always gets her way. With ...

Is this ballet for you?
Go If: Girly and funny stories with plenty of romance, ribbons and happy endings are your thing and you simply can’t get enough of Ashton. You are bringing your kids or friends to see a ballet for the first time and need something light and fluffy to start with.
Skip If: People dressed as animals freak you out. Fille is not quite as bad as Tales of Beatrix Potter in that regard but it does feature dancing chickens, a rooster and even a real pony.
Dream Cast:
Lise: Marianela Nuñez is the quintessential ray-of-sunshine Fille.
Colas: Carlos Acosta is ...
The World We Live In

The Royal Ballet’s latest triple bill is a rare combination of three recent ballets, all done by living choreographers. It includes young Jonathan Watkins’ brand new piece As One. Here’s what each Bag Lady thought of his vibrant debut in the Covent Garden main stage:

Emilia says:
If you still don’t have a ticket for this week’s two final performances of As One then I suggest you grab one. Jonathan Watkins’ debut in the main stage is one of those myth busting pieces which prove that classical ...
An Interview with Kim Brandstrup
February 19, 2010 · Posted by The Ballet Bag ·
A few days before we set off for Copenhagen we had the opportunity to chat to UK based Danish choreographer Kim Brandstrup. Kim has consistently produced innovative, modern pieces using non-linear narrative. His film-school background is a visible influence on his style, with plenty of shifts, cuts and stories that are open for personal interpretation. Goldberg, his 2009 project with Royal Ballet Principal Tamara Rojo has just been nominated for an Olivier Award (Best New Dance Production) but the main focus of our conversation was Rushes, Fragments of a Lost Story a piece Kim created for The Royal ...
Marianela Nuñez & Thiago Soares: The Romeo & Juliet Interview
February 2, 2010 · Posted by The Ballet Bag ·
When Linda and I were mulling over ideas for a Valentine’s special it seemed a no-brainer that the dancers we were looking for were Thiago Soares and Marianela Nuñez: we wanted to feature a ballet couple in head-over-heels, hopelessly in love mode; a couple so connected they could finish each other’s sentences and play along with the romantic mood of the photo-feature we were planning.
Electrifying ballet partnerships like Thiago and Marianela’s are rare. Together they continue to grow and secure such coveted roles as Diamonds in Balanchine’s Jewels (2007), MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet (2008) plus Crown Prince ...
