Use Social Media To Your Advantage
July 27, 2010 · Posted by 4dancers ·
There are many ways to use social media. You can connect with other dancers in the field, keep up on the latest happenings in terms of a company you like–or get the word out about your latest performances.
But don’t overlook sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn for things such as research.
If you are going to be interviewing for a job somewhere, check out the LinkedIn profile of the organization, or peek at their Facebook page for the latest info. Many employers are doing just that these days when it comes to screening potential applicants–why shouldn’t you use it to your advantage as well?
You just ...

Dear HB blog followers,
Please accept our humblest apologies for the lack of bloggage lately! As you’ll see in this update, we’ve had our hands a bit full since the Prix de Lausanne. Let’s get started…
In case you missed it, we announced our 2010-2011 season in late January. We’re incredibly excited about the mix of premieres (like Balanchine’s Jewels) and tried-and-true fan favorites (like Ben Stevenson’s The Sleeping Beauty). The ticketing department is in high gear taking subscription orders, while the marketing/PR department is already discussing the 2011-2012 season photo shoot. It’s amazing (and stressful) to ...
San Francisco Open Your Golden Gate

During my most recent move I felt it was necessary to step back from things for a little while, which is why you haven’t heard from me in a very long time. I’ve always enjoyed writing, not only to connect to the audience and other dancers but also for myself; I’m finally ready to start that again.
Life has brought me back to San Francisco and I am currently corps de ballet with the San Francisco Ballet. My year in Hamburg was an incredible adventure and I learned more about ballet, life, and myself than I ever could have imagined. John ...

Joshua Blake Carter – Day 1
March 12, 2009 · Posted by BNC | ballet nouveau colorado ·
Today was my first day working with the Ballet Nouveau dancers, and I woke up anxious to get started. I arrived in time to watch the last 45 minutes of company class… WOW! I had imagined amazing dancers, but these dancers brought so much more. After the dancers finished with class I jumped right in to teaching choreography. While we did set some choreography today, we also played the game of trial and error. Together we found what worked, and what didn’t. As choreographers we are VERY lucky to have Dawn Fay in the ...

My first entryHello BNC fans! My name is Joshua Blake Carter, and I am one of the three finalists that you helped select for the dancemakers2.0 competition. I currently reside in sunny Tucson where I attend the University of Arizona as a dance major. As I finish out the last few months of my undergraduate work, I am pleased to be able to travel to Colorado and work with the beautiful dancers at Ballet Nouveau.I am originally from a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia where I grew up knowing very little about dance. After a parent teacher ...
Jennifer Hart – Last Day
March 7, 2009 · Posted by BNC | ballet nouveau colorado ·
What an amazing last day! I finished choreographing my piece this morning. I wasn’t sure how the last section (of five) would come together. I choreographed patterns and general movement ideas in my head last night and I didn’t know if all the elements would fit together. Figuring it out is a little like solving a puzzle of my own making. Once all the choreography was done, we spent the rest of the morning picking on details. After lunch, the dancers showed the piece to Garrett and the staff. That was thrilling!I’m sad to leave. This experience is like a ...
Jennifer Hart – Day 5
March 6, 2009 · Posted by BNC | ballet nouveau colorado ·
I’ve just finished my fourth working day with the company. This is a very hard working bunch and we’ve cranked out a significant amount of choreography. I worked on a trio for Megan, Sean and David, finishing that in a couple of hours. It’s a ‘puffer’ as I like to call it. It’s three minutes long. The dancers are jumping a lot and taking up a large amount of stage space. No problem for them. I also finished a slow pas de deux. I changed a couple of things that weren’t working. We kept trying for a specific lift that ...
Jennifer Hart – Day 4
March 5, 2009 · Posted by BNC | ballet nouveau colorado ·
Monday, on my day off, I went to the studio to work on some sections of the piece I knew I’d be touching on Tuesday. Although I’d got a lot done the first three days, I felt that if I didn’t come in prepared on Tuesday, I’d be pushing to the last minute of my time here. I wanted to leave two full days to work on the final section. That section is the most complex in terms of musicality and choreography with lots of partnering and several choreographies going on simultaneously; I figured it would take me the longest. ...

Hi, my name is Jennifer Hart and I currently live in Austin, Texas with my partner John. I moved to Austin a year and a half ago from Minneapolis to take a full-time teaching position with Ballet Austin. I work independently as a choreographer and either receive commissions from different organizations or I produce work independently.I’ve just finished three intense days of rehearsal and have gotten a lot of material set on the dancers. They’re incredibly quick to pick up the feeling of my movement and yet bring distinct personalities to the work.I spent the first hour of rehearsal teaching ...
