Trespass Mag: Chunky Move- Mortal Engine
March 13, 2010 · Posted by Dance, music and life: graceegirl ·
Choreographer Gideon Obarzanek describes Mortal Engine as a dance-video-music-laser performance. The hyphens are fully justified. An awe-inspiring hybrid work that explores the relationship between movement and technology, Mortal Engine takes live interaction to a new level.Obarzanek’s fixation on the idea of contrast is boldly visual from the outset. The performance begins in darkness, with a host of laser images flashing across the raised stage. A single dancer emerges, bathed in white light. As she moves, she leaves a white glow around her, a beacon in the dark.Only when this image is reversed do we see the sinister ‘other’ side of ...

Five Ways Postmodern Principles Can Positively Impact Your Studio
March 9, 2010 · Posted by Dance Advantage ·

Whether adding an improvisation class, a creative composition course, or just exposing students to performance and video, incorporating postmodern dance principles into your studio structure and course offerings is a step in the right direction for developing more well-rounded dancers and standout dance studios.
But where is postmodern dance in studio instruction?
It is a commonly asked question in today’s growing dance world.
Most studio dancers have been exposed to the traditional course offerings of ballet, jazz, and tap dance. They are familiar with ballet terminology, tap ...

An ingenious trompe l’œuil fusion of physical and video-image bodies…merged and then disappeared with magical and fascinating suddenness” - New York Times

Video by Peter Bobrow, music by Ken Field, animation by Karen Aqua, and lighting design by Frank ...
Thom Donovan on Kathy Westwater’s PARK
March 5, 2010 · Posted by Dance Theater Workshop ·
“Seeing PARK (still in progress) at Dance Theater Workshop’s 3rd floor studio on February 18, I was acutely aware from the start that I was witnessing bodies deforming themselves through movement techniques. Gia Kourlas on Blocks of Continuality/Body, Image, Algorithm
March 4, 2010 · Posted by Dance Theater Workshop ·
“Koosil-ja is most interested in how the approach, which she first experienced while working with the Wooster Group, removes as many references from the body as possible. From the outside the method desexualizes the body. In the final meditative solo Ms. Guerrero begins to mumble directions to herself like, “Leg to the front and side.” Eventually her body grows still, though there remains imperceptible movement. It’s as if beneath the surface of her skin, her muscles and tendons refuse to stop dancing.” - Gia Kourlas, New York Times
