sharpies, acrylic, colored pencils & an old canvas

February 22, 2010 · Posted by From One Foot to the Other ·
i bought an old canvas from goodwill a few months back. it was already painted. a still life. a chair, window, table.  $1.00. i painted over it with latex ceiling paint. the stuff that starts off lavender and then turns white. we had some extra cans in the basement and i didn’t feel like spending money on gesso or other stuff. i don’t know what i’m doing anyway so it seems appropriate to use what i have around the house to experiment with before i go and get “official” materials. i also have some old acrylics, a box of sharpies and a ...

TRINAWINA (CHILI’s) BALLERINA….yes…that’s what i said!

February 18, 2010 · Posted by From One Foot to the Other ·
i’ve been in Orlando, FL since Tuesday. Business. i’ve tried to eat right (yeah, right!) with no grocery store, no car, no cooking space and nothing but chain food places. Coffee & smokes? Plenty.  But tonight i decided, what the hell? i’m going to be “normal” and go out for a dinner/dessert splurge. Where? Well it was  a toss up. Chili’s? TGIFriday’s? Sonny’s BBQ? Tony Roma’s Ribs/Seafood/Steaks? Denny’s? ………………wow.  After a few phone calls for recommendations, Chili’s won. i can’t why exactly but it came down to something like….”they’re all basically the same and the next place on the main drag as i’m walking ...

creative writing exercise #5: pick 2 #s

December 7, 2009 · Posted by From One Foot to the Other ·
pick 2 numbers between 1 & 20 and then write a piece using the two words that correspond to the numbers you chose. i picked 3 & 16: lethargy & sink respectively i wrote until i finished. Caroline & Her Coffee Caroline had only slept for two and a half hours, but she was somehow awake and standing at her kitchen sink. The smell of the coffee brewing and the eggs cooking didn’t help her feel any more rested. She longed to feel revived and alive like those people in the Folger’s commercials. Her iPhone jingled where it sat on the counter. “Who or what ...

forgiving myself for being a beginner……

November 22, 2009 · Posted by From One Foot to the Other ·
i’ve always wanted to be able to do something other than dance. express myself in some other medium. form. so i doodle. so i scribble. so i slosh paint around my basement. each time forgiving myself for the mess i make and the total silliness that results. i write and it feels right but to skilled writers it must sound like nonsense. awkwardly constructed and just bad. i paint and it does not feel right but i do it anyway. i doodle and i know that all i’m capable of is squiggly lines and cartoonish flatness. not even good cartoonish flatness. anyway. that’s why i ...

creative writing exercise #2: head

November 16, 2009 · Posted by From One Foot to the Other ·
here’s #2 the instructions were something like “look at the group of words on the page. choose one with the most energy or the least energy….write about it for 10 minutes” HEAD BEGIN: v1: It’s all in your head. v2: No, it isn’t. v1: Yes, it is. v2: No, it isn’t! v1: Well, if it isn’t, where could it possibly be? In your ass? v2: Oh, funny, asshole. No. Not in my ass. In my mind. v1: Your mind? Isn’t your mind the same as your head? v2: I don’t think so. I mean, MY HEAD is MY HEAD, but MY MIND is MY MIND. v1: So, it’s all in your mind, ...

creative writing exercise #1: loose lines

November 16, 2009 · Posted by From One Foot to the Other ·
i bought a book full of creative writing exercises…….the ones that say something like “here’s a sketch….write about it for 10 minutes.” i like this book. i’ve done a few of the exercises so far.  by Anne Bernays here’s #1 (not #1 in the book but the first one i’m posting here) LOOSE LINES (15 minutes…..yes!…i set a timer!) Loose Lines Exercise: pgs. 88-89 BEGIN: A tangled mess of quickly drawn lines. Elegant tangle. A dance. A roadmap to nowhere. Nowhere to dance because the space is so saturated with these intertwined and densely packed streams of scribbles. Thoughts are scribbles. They are discreet but still sketched. Each ...
