Greetings from Tokyo!

Japan is a balletomane’s paradise: plenty of local and visiting ballet companies, glitzy guest stars (some of them are here on a regular basis) and, of course, the best in ballet merchandise. In the trendiest Tokyo districts flagship dance stores sell premium quality dancewear and ballet shoes, along with – for those more intent on watching ballet than taking class – DVDs, books and glossy magazines like Danza. During my stay I’ve been surprised by the sheer number of local ballet companies, the quality of their productions and the material they create and distribute to promote them. Generally available at theatre foyers ...Marianela Nuñez & Thiago Soares: The Romeo & Juliet Interview

When Linda and I were mulling over ideas for a Valentine’s special it seemed a no-brainer that the dancers we were looking for were Thiago Soares and Marianela Nuñez: we wanted to feature a ballet couple in head-over-heels, hopelessly in love mode; a couple so connected they could finish each other’s sentences and play along with the romantic mood of the photo-feature we were planning. Electrifying ballet partnerships like Thiago and Marianela’s are rare. Together they continue to grow and secure such coveted roles as Diamonds in Balanchine’s Jewels (2007), MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet (2008) plus Crown Prince ...Marianela Nuñez & Thiago Soares: The Romeo & Juliet Interview

It’s been over 2 years since Alina Cojocaru danced a MacMillan ballet at Covent Garden. Audience at "Kenneth MacMillan's Choreographic Imagination and Psychological Insight" Symposium. Photo: Charlotte MacMillan © Earlier this month we attended the Kenneth MacMillan Choreographic Imagination and Psychological Insight Symposium at Imperial College London. Celebrating the choreographer who would have been 80 this year, this full day event was held in association with The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and the Institute of Psychoanalysis and drew on psychoanalysts, scholars and dancers sharing insights into MacMillan’s ballets, along with rare archival footage and live masterclasses. A full register will soon be available through the new Kenneth MacMillan official website (which goes live December 11) ...
