Reader Topic: Getting Free Dance Lessons
March 9, 2010 · Posted by You Dance Funny, So Does Me ·
So I was contacted by a reader who moderates the website http://fr.ee, a website that is solely devoted to getting freebies in life, including how to get free dance lessons. He suggested that as a topic for my blog and I am happy to oblige…because unsurprisingly, I have opinions on this. They already have a post that is more focused on ballroom dances like salsa, so I thought I’d tackle styles that I’m either more familiar with or have somehow managed to make its way into my category bar you see to the right.
I must preface by saying that my ...
dance flash and review @ the appeal: hope mohr and sf ballet
March 8, 2010 · Posted by dance in san francisco ·
Two things from last week at the SF Appeal:A Q&A with Hope Mohr:"I made many detours away from the path of dancing, but I finally heard--and listened to--the voice inside that was still saying, "Dance!" I had to return to dance to be true to myself."And a review of SF Ballet's Program 4 (which was held until this AM b/c of a backlog):"It's almost like a battle: think Eminem in pointe shoes (oh gee, what an image), battling with his body instead of his mouth."

Looking through the window
March 1, 2010 · Posted by You Dance Funny, So Does Me ·
A couple of days ago I attended Separate Panes, an MFA project by graduate student James Graham of the Ohio State University. Of course I had no idea what to expect (and it’s always healthier to approach a modern dance with no preconceived ideas), but what I did know was that it would be an installation in Sullivant Library (which unbeknownst to me is going to be gutted and renovated!). I have to admit, because of my mischievous spirit, installation type live art is…interesting for me. I so badly want to take it personally as a challenge to see if ...

Merce Cunningham: the Legacy Tour
February 13, 2010 · Posted by You Dance Funny, So Does Me ·
Tonight was the inaugural performance of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company’s Legacy Tour, which will travel the world (Rome is next, according to the salesman from whom I bought a couple of postcards) performing works from Merce Cunningham’s repertory of modern dances. I was so honored to be in the audience tonight; to see MCDC perform live for the very first time, to be a tiny part of this historic tour and most of all, honored to have seen Cunningham choreography. It was a very special occasion (even though I didn’t have time to eat dinner and was starving throughout ...
Perspective on Winter Perspective
February 12, 2010 · Posted by You Dance Funny, So Does Me ·
To kick off the pre-weekend, I attended Winter Perspective, the MFA concert for four graduate students of Ohio State University’s Department of Dance. The concert featured Romantic era ballet solos made famous by the legendary Fanny Elssler, restaged from hieroglyphics (labanotation…you say tomato, I say tomato) as well as contemporary works also staged from notation score. After intermission (during which I foolishly abstained from using the restroom…it was almost as bad as the time I had a twelve hour flight from Tokyo to Washington D.C. and had the “coveted” window seat, except the ogre man next to me in the ...

Our second featured studio from Arkansas is…
Name: Arkansas Academy Of Dance
Location: 10301 N. Rodney Parham Rd., Brackenridge Village, Little Rock, AR, 72227
About: This school has a typical lineup of classes, including creative movement, ballet, jazz and modern. It also offers Pilates. There is a scholarship program for boys and a cash-based referral program for those who get a new student to sign up and take some classes.
What really caught my eye was the creative way that they peppered mini-events into the dance class schedule. I noticed that they have a “bring a friend week”, a “parent participation week” and even a “costume week” to help ...
