Big Eater at The Kitchen

An inebriated David Hasselhoff, a Big Mac, Giselle, and pretentious panel discussions – these are just a few of the sources that shaped David Neumann’s Big Eater, which was performed at The Kitchen last weekend and continues through this Saturday. This may sound like a recipe for big laughs, but Big Eater is a dark, depressing work filled with piles of language and movement – not to mention a pile of chairs from floor to ceiling – that become denser and more disorderly as the work progresses. ...

William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker opens on Broadway today – the first revival in nearly fifty years. A recent New York Times profile of Abigail Breslin, who plays Helen, revealed that the actors trained in Ohad Naharin’s movement language, Gaga, in order to prepare for the physical demands of their roles. Lee Sher, who cofounded LeeSaar The Company in 2000, oversaw their training throughout the production. Here’s an excerpt from the article:
One key to Ms. Breslin’s preparation has been Lee Sher, the production’s physical-training adviser, who works with Ms. Breslin and Ms. [Alison] Pill [who plays Annie ...

DVD Review: Up, Down & All Around
December 2, 2009 · Posted by 4Dancers Blog ·
If you are a parent of a small child, or a teacher who is looking to incorporate age-appropriate movement into the classroom, this DVD may be for you. Up Down & All Around is a movement and exercise program that was designed by Stacey Pepper Schwartz, a dance professional, and a mom. The video is well-produced and features some fun, live music by Steve Blunt to go along with the exercises. Blunt’s “Macaroni & Cheese” song was one of my favorites…
Although you can do this DVD together in the living room, you may want to make a bit of space, as swinging arms and ...

Batsheva Dance Company’s studios at the Suzanne Dellal Centre
Last Friday morning, I returned to Tel Aviv’s Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre to take my second Gaga class. After reawakening my body in Thursday evening’s class and getting a good night of sleep, I was eager for more Gaga. About thirty other people and I entered the top floor of Batsheva’s studios for our class with Yaara, a former dancer with Batsheva Dance Company who started her own company last year. The spacious studio was flooded with morning sunlight and had a fantastic view of the sea.
Yaara’s verbal instructions ...

The entrance to the Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre
Since first experiencing Gaga – the movement language created by Batsheva Dance Company’s artistic director Ohad Naharin – in early 2008, I have been yearning for more, and so has most of the dance world. When the Israel-based company performs abroad, they try to offer Gaga classes not only for dancers, but also for the general public. After all, Naharin developed Gaga after years of working with both dancers and non-dancers while also recovering from his own back injury. Batsheva trains daily in Gaga, and since 2001, open classes in ...
Thinking about the body…

Thinking about the body, about movement, about states of being. Where am i now? In a chair at my desk. Tea from mug still warm on my tongue. Unanswered bills, scattered lists of things to do. How does this dance of paper shuffling go? This is a state of being... observing, not trying, simply noticing. I babysat today. Smiley, happy boy, so full of movement, eight months old. He's trying to find his crawl. Only managing some spasmotic Twister moves. Still able to truck along somehow, not very fast. Very interested in pulling himself up to standing though ...
