What is “Contemporary” Dance?

July 30, 2010 · Posted by Dance Doc's Think Tank ·
Defining dance and locating its roots is never simple and never complete, but the attempt is always enlightening. All summer I have been thinking about Contemporary dance: Historically, how did Contemporary dance evolve? What are its major influences and artistic motivations? What are its distinguishing features? How does one train to become a Contemporary dancer? [...]

Video: Batsheva Dancers Create The Batsheva Dance Company’s dancers might have cooled off at the beach to make this video, but this July, they – and many of Israel’s finest dancers – will be heating up the Suzanne Dellal Center’s stages during SummerDance 2010.  The annual festival, called Maholohet in Hebrew (a play on the words for “dance” and “hot”), will take place from July 1-August 31 and boast 84 performances. Blood Diamond- The Ballet

June 16, 2010 · Posted by "Bodies Never Lie" ·
Here are what I can come up with (off the top of my head) as the most enjoyable full length top 5 live dance performances I’ve seen: 1. Eugene Onegin- Sttugart Ballet 2. La Bayadere- Marinsky Ballet 3. Anytown- Shapiro and Smith 4. Edward Scissorhands- Matthew Bourne (choreography) 5. Swan Lake – Louisville Ballet This list would have been a lot harder to make if I were including individual pieces, ‘Forbidden Boundaries’ by River North (chor. Frank Chaves) and  ‘Decadance’ by Cedar Lake (chor. Naharin) would have made the list- and I’m not including things I’ve only seen on youtube or tape- therefore eliminating ‘Vespers’ and ...

Koresh strikes gold with Israeli’s duet

April 29, 2010 · Posted by danceJournal ·
By Ellen Dunkel For The Inquirer Inspiration can come from the least likely sources. For Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin, it happened on a plane, via an in-flight entertainment program. “Greensleeves” from John Gay’s 1728 Beggar’s Opera was playing in his ears as two flight attendants demonstrated safety regulations. And he saw dance. “I thought it was funny,” he said in an e-mail. The English folk ballad became the score for Passomezzo, a 10-minute duet created in 1989 for Nederlands Dans Theater’s junior company. Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Company will perform Passomezzo for the first time Thursday night when the company opens ...

Batsheva Ensemble in Ohad Naharin’s “Kamuyot”

April 21, 2010 · Posted by Dance In Israel ·
Video: Batsheva Ensemble in Ohad Naharin’s Kamuyot My first glimpse of the Batsheva Ensemble when I arrived in Israel was in Kamuyot, and I was able to revisit the work for a preview of the company’s most recent staging at Studio Varda in Suzanne Dellal last weekend. A version of my article on Kamuyot was first published in the Jerusalem Post as “Stepping In.” * * * Stepping In Ohad Naharin’s Kamuyot.  Photo by Gadi Dagon. Ohad Naharin’s Kamuyot isn’t your average family-friendly dance.  It’s not built on fanciful fairy tales or familiar children’s stories, like the ballet classic The Nutcracker or modern ...

Batsheva Ensemble in Ohad Naharin’s “Kyr/Z/na”

March 15, 2010 · Posted by Dance In Israel ·
Video: Trailer for Kyr/Z/na It’s been a particularly fascinating season at Batsheva.  As the company marks the 20th anniversary of Ohad Naharin’s arrival as artistic director, it has placed a wealth of choreographic treasures onstage for review at the Suzanne Dellal Center: Hora (2009), Project 5 (2008), Three (2005), Mamootot (2003), and Kamuyot (2003). This programming has promoted what Naharin has discussed in several press conferences: an opportunity for the choreographer, dancers, and audience members alike to revisit the choreography.  Project 5, itself a compilation of excerpts stretching from 1985’s Black Milk to 2008’s B/olero and originally danced by five women, was ...

Batsheva Dance Company: Ohad Naharin’s “Shalosh” (“Three”)

February 15, 2010 · Posted by Dance In Israel ·
Video: Batsheva Dance Company in Ohad Naharin’s Three Five years after its premiere, Ohad Naharin’s Shalosh (Three) still lures audiences to the Suzanne Dellal Center – and judging by the enthusiastic curtain calls last Saturday night, the work continues to captivate crowds.  My preview of this run of Three was originally published in the Jerusalem Post as “Lucky Number ‘Three.’” * * * Three by Ohad Naharin.  Photo by Gadi Dagon. Addressing a small crowd in the Batsheva Dance Company’s studios during an open rehearsal of Three, artistic director and choreographer Ohad Naharin mused that we frequently revisit books, movies, and music. So ...
