So You Think You Can Dance: Getting to the heart of the matter

Now that Season 7 of So You Think You Can Dance has come to a close and the confetti has settled since Lauren Froderman’s crowning in the season finale, I’d like to wrap up my reflection with one final post on the show for this summer. Previously I discussed the good, the bad, and the utterly frustrating with 15 reasons why dancers do not like the show and conversely a list of 10 positive aspects of the show. While I’ve enjoyed focusing on the quality of the show in these posts, what I’d really like to do is get to ...

What to Expect At Your First Dance Audition

August 23, 2010 · Posted by Dance Full Out™ ·
Congratulations! You’ve learned some dance skills and you are ready to go to your first dance audition (or take your son or daughter there). What should you expect? Well, first you’ll sign in, and someone will show you where to prepare and warm up. Then, the casting director usually asks all the dancers to enter a big room where the choreographer teaches a brief combination. Then, the casting director or choreographer will split the group up into smaller groups and ask each group to do the combination they just learned. At this point, the casting director may ask certain people to show certain skills, ...

So You Think You Can Dance’s Ellenore Teaching at DNA

August 14, 2010 · Posted by Tonya Plank » Swan Lake Samba Girl ·
I received news from Dance New Amsterdam that Ellenore Scott, finalist from season 6 of SYTYCD, will be teaching an intermediate / advanced contemporary class there for two weeks starting August 17th. I thought it sounded fun and thought I’d pass on the info to you guys, if anyone is in NY and takes classes. Apparently, Scott has been touring with Janet Jackson and is taking a two-week hiatus from that to teach. DNA is located downtown and has excellent rehearsal studios and a good little theater as well (I’ve seen performances and rehearsals there). The news on them of ...

First Gatorade Dancer Athlete is a Woman!

August 13, 2010 · Posted by Tonya Plank » Swan Lake Samba Girl ·
I’m really glad Lauren Froderman won So You Think You Can Dance last night. I didn’t think I had a clear favorite until it came down to the time when Cat Deeley was getting ready the winner’s name and I was practically falling off my couch, chanting, “Please Lauren, please Lauren, please!” in my head. I think one of the coolest things about the winner’s prize this time is that Gatorade ad. According to what Nigel Lythgoe’d said earlier, this season’s winner will get to be Gatorade’s very first dance athlete included in their advertising campaign. Very cool someone like ...

America Crowns their Favorite Dancer for 2010

August 13, 2010 · Posted by This Momma Can Dance ·
It’s going to be a show packed with amazing dance–and we get to see all our favorite pieces from the entire season as well! All that before we find out who is America’s favorite dancer on season 7 of So You Think You Can Dance. Let’s get movin’! First off, let me say that I love Cat’s dress, it’s very ballerina-ish. And I always love her hair. Her stylist manages with extreme precision to style it in a way that it does not look styled, just like she pushed a brush through it after a couple hot rollers and went. Brilliant. What ...

So You Think You Can Dance: And Then There Were Three…

August 12, 2010 · Posted by This Momma Can Dance ·
It’s the first of two finale nights on Season 7 of So You Think You Can Dance, and while I regret Alex not being here with all my heart, I wish Kent, Lauren and Robert luck as we launch into the first night of the Top 3 Performances! Who will win America’s Favor? Let’s find out. First up is All-Star Lauren and Kent with a Nakul Dev Mahajan Bollywood routine. Can Kent deliver the cheese? And the lightning-fast hand gestures? Oh most definitely. There could have been even more cheese in my opinion, but the dance moves were simply too fast ...

So You Think You Can Dance isn’t all bad: 10 positives about the show

August 7, 2010 · Posted by The Hidden Language of the Soul ·
In my last post, I focused on the negative aspects of the hit reality dance show, So You Think You Can Dance, with 15 reasons why dancers don’t like the show. But as I noted in my conclusion, there are also positives about the show and some things that SYTYCD does very well. So for this post, I’m diving into glass-half-full mode and noting 10 positive qualities about the show. (Though, the fact that there are less items in this list should be telling.) Without further ado, let’s look at the sunny side of So You Think You Can Dance. 1)  ...
